THURSDAY NIGHT: Important Meeting on Preserving Views of Hudson HighlandsDear Scenic Hudson Member: In addition to preserving land and creating public parks, Scenic Hudson also works to shape development projects to minimize their visual and environmental impacts. One such project is the U.S. Army Garrison at West Point's proposed expansion of the Stony Lonesome Housing I Project. Portions of this development will be visible from widespread locations across the Hudson River in Putnam County, most prominently parts of Garrison, including the scenic view points of Boscobel and the Garrison School Forest, and to a lesser extent, the Village of Cold Spring and points north, including Breakneck Ridge. Scenic Hudson urges concerned residents to attend a public information briefing on this project, which may be your last opportunity to express your concerns and suggestions for this project.
WHAT: Stony Lonesome Public Information Briefing Scenic Hudson has worked closely with the Hudson Highlands Land Trust and with the U.S. Army Garrison and developer, Balfour Beatty Communities, to help mitigate some of the adverse visual impacts through the use of natural building materials, earth-tone colors and the planting of additional trees. In spite of these efforts, the project will be visible at the top of the ridge from historic sites, public locations and private residences in the above-mentioned locations. The project will be most visible for the next 10 to twenty years, because removal of existing trees and vegetation will occur. Scenic Hudson submitted comments on the Environmental Assessment. You can download these comments via this link [pdf, 68K]. For more information about the project please contact Mr. Michael Colacicco, RCI Project and Assets Manager, U.S. Army Garrison, West Point, N.Y., (845) 938-5948.
Thanks for all you do,
Ned Sullivan |
