Dear Scenic Hudson Member,

The Yonkers City Council voted on Tuesday, Oct. 7, to approve, as final, the developer Struever Fidelco Capelli's draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the Yonkers waterfront. The vote came without resolving many important issues and concerns raised by residents.

Just a few of the concerns include:

  • Woefully inadequate waterfront open space for both current and new Yonkers residents.
  • Eliminating the Prospect Street Bridge would cause major traffic jams and cut off river access for residents.
  • Still pushing for 25-story waterfront towers -- despite repeated public rejection -- that would cast shadows on the existing city and forever eliminate precious Palisades views.
  • Lack of safeguards for using state funds earmarked for "daylighting" the Saw Mill River to create a vibrant downtown amenity.
  • Converting Yonkers and Nepperhan Avenues to arterials and eliminating parking spaces which adversely affects local business and residents.
  • Unanswered questions about impacts on existing, local businesses.

Some city council members expressed that they see open issues as well. Scenic Hudson's planners are continuing to monitor this important proposed project. We'll keep you posted about upcoming meetings and ways you can be heard on the issues you care about.

Stay informed. Stay involved.

Thanks for your support for a vibrant public Yonkers waterfront.

Sincerely,

Ned Sullivan signature
