| Dear Scenic Hudson Member, Update:The City of Kingston Planning Board has announced that it will vote on accepting the final generic environmental impact statement (FGEIS) from developer AVR for its proposed 1,682-unit Hudson Landing housing development. The vote is expected to come at the planning board's Tuesday, Oct. 14, meeting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 420 Broadway. Scenic Hudson planners are monitoring this proposed project, and we'll be at the meeting. The session will not provide for public comment, but if you'd like to join us to see firsthand how the vote goes, we look forward to seeing you. Once the planning board votes to accept the FGEIS as complete, they will prepare their "findings statement." We'll keep you posted about upcoming meetings. Call for Action:Your second and potentially last opportunity to offer the planning board your input on Sailor's Cove -- another large-scale development proposed for Kingston's waterfront -- is quickly approaching. The hearing is on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Ohio-based developer Polaris wants to build a 365-unit development, known as Sailor's Cove, adjacent to the AVR complex and just north of Kingston Point Beach. The Sailor's Cove proposal is clearly inconsistent with the city's existing character, containing many of the same negative impacts the public worked hard to alleviate at Hudson Landing. We're urging residents to show up and let Polaris and city officials know loud and clear that current plans are unacceptable. Scenic Hudson and other groups in the Friends of Kingston Waterfront (FoKW) coalition are calling for fewer units so that more of the waterfront can be open to residents and so that visual impacts and traffic impacts can be reduced. Further echoing the desire of residents, we're advocating that the development be redesigned to offer a traditional sense of place and neighborhood like that in Kingston's Uptown, Ponckhockie and Rondout neighborhoods. This meeting is a powerful opportunity for you to positively influence this project, which would impact life in Kingston for generations. We hope to see you there. Look for Scenic Hudson at Rondout's Taste of ItalySunday, Oct. 12, join Scenic Hudson -- proud sponsor of this Rondout Business Association event -- for a fall celebration of the city's great waterfront on the Rondout. There's food and entertainment, including fun especially for kids at the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Your voice and your enthusiasm are helping to make the valley an ever-greater place to live, work and have fun. To enjoy the fruits of your efforts, please visit www.scenichudson.org/events for a listing of free, fun events at Scenic Hudson's parks up and down the Hudson. Sincerely,
Ned Sullivan |
