We've only got one waterfront in Yonkers... and Monday, Feb. 25, could be your LAST CHANCE to speak out for its future

Dear Scenic Hudson Member:

Between now and Monday, Feb. 25, the city of Yonkers is accepting public comments about the latest Alexander Street Master Plan, a proposed row of skyscrapers that could wall off the waterfront from the rest of the community. Everyone agrees a revitalized Yonkers is long overdue -- just look at the latest press coverage about the approaching deadline for public comment on the Alexander Street proposal:

• page-one editorial in the Feb. 21 Westchester Times Tribune.

The message is clear: this is a unique chance for residents to help shape life in Yonkers for decades to come. If we work together now, Yonkers can enjoy an urban renaissance, with "smart growth" economic development near public transit, parks and open space sufficient to meet the needs of a growing population, and buildings designed to save energy. We also can provide new and better jobs that benefit current residents and attract newcomers.

But the first step is to SPEAK OUT for the right kind of development:

• More and bigger waterfront public parks (at least 33% of total acreage)
• No wall of high-rises along the waterfront
• An extended public comment period so citizens can consider, and speak up about, these complex proposals
