Tell Gov. Spitzer: Kingston Waterfront Proposal a Big ProblemTourism -- Ulster County ($388 million/year) and Dutchess County ($477 million/year) -- threatened
Dear Scenic Hudson Member: You may have seen from recent news stories that the 1,750-unit development proposed for Kingston's waterfront -- while marginally improved -- still would blight views and damage the local and regional economy. Two studies issued recently -- but consistent with themes we've raised for more than two years -- show that the planned project is still so massive that it would violate the city's own waterfront development guidelines and the state's coastal policies. It's the largest residential development ever proposed on the Hudson north of NYC. On the eve of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's historic sail up the river, Kingston has a once-in-a-century opportunity to create a world-class waterfront development. It's critical that this development provide a lasting environmental and economic asset for Kingston and the entire Mid-Hudson region. Besides sustaining a thriving tourism industry, a smaller and better designed project would help attract new businesses seeking locations with high quality of life. Done right the waterfront will be a powerful force in making Kingston a better place to live, work and have fun. Timing is crucial -- Gov. and NYS Dept. of State need to hear from you
Sincerely,
Ned Sullivan |
