You've Got City Leaders' Attention, so Keep the Pressure on for 120-day Comment Period and Public Waterfront for All

Dear Scenic Hudson Member:

It's been a real fight for residents to be heard in their call for a public waterfront that will meet everyone's needs, not just those of the developers.

Concerned residents like you have been saying over and over again -- YES to revitalization and positive change but with more parks and recreational facilities, and NO to the wall of skyscrapers proposed by developers.

Together, we've started to gain momentum - and we must build on it.

  • A meeting Scenic Hudson had with the Journal News helped yield a Jan. 18 editorial that called for a longer public comment periodand an open dialogue on the future of the city's waterfront.
  • Then you turned out in force for a Jan. 23 public hearing; the Journal News reported "Yonkers Alexander Street Plan Under Fire"

The city has provided a 60-day comment period (to end Monday, Feb. 25), but is that sufficient to set the course of the city's waterfront for the next 100 years? Scenic Hudson is calling for a 120-day public comment period on the Alexander Street Master Plan.

Turn out for meetings and speak up
Because residents and Scenic Hudson have spoken out, city officials have agreed to two public hearings instead of the one they'd initially wanted to ram through the plan.

However, your strong voice is needed to persuade reluctant city officials to provide a meaningful and fair timeframe for reviewing the complex plan. To keep the pressure on for a public waterfront for all, please attend the following meetings and call for a 120-day comment period, more public parks and no high-rise towers:

Wednesday, Feb. 13, 7:30 p.m.
City Council Chambers
City Hall
City Council meeting - speak up for what you want for your waterfront so city leaders feel a rising tide of residents who reject the skyscrapers
Thursday, Feb. 14, 6:30 p.m.
Ceremonial Courtroom,
City Hall
Public hearing on Alexander Street Master Plan - It's Valentine's Day so show your love for your river and waterfront

Call and e-mail your elected officials
In addition to turnout at meetings, they notice when people call and e-mail them on an issue:

  • City Council President Chuck Lesnick: 914 377 6060
  • City Council District 1, Patricia D. McDow: 914 377 6311
  • City Council District 2, Sandy Annabi: 914 377 6312
  • City Council District 3, Joan Gronowski: 914 377 6313
  • Commissioner of Planning and Development Louis C. Kirven: 914 377 6150

Help spread the word
Download this flyer [pdf, 121K] to e-mail to friends, or print and give it to them. How about posting the flyer at a prominent downtown location to help engage people?

Thanks for all you've done with Scenic Hudson in the battle so far. Your waterfront is at stake, so stay energized and stay with us.
