Congress should not block health and environmental protections

Your U.S. Senators and Representative need to hear from YOU.

The US House of Representatives recently passed a new budget bill that would keep the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from doing its job. We need your help to tell your House members and Senators not to take away important protections for our water and our health.

The recent budget bill from the House would take away EPA’s ability to protect us from mercury, arsenic, carbon dioxide and other pollution…and it would leave the drinking water of 100 million Americans at risk. For almost 40 years, the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act have improved water and air quality and protected people’s health. We can’t let polluters take away that protection now.

The new budget bill would cut EPA’s budget by 30%, making it almost impossible for EPA to do its job. It would also prevent EPA from enforcing laws and rules that protect our water, our health and our communities. Here are a few examples:

Protecting our drinking water and our streams: The House budget would stop EPA from fixing Bush Administration changes to the Clean Water Act that eliminated protection for many small streams and put the drinking water for millions of people at risk. The House budget would also prevent EPA from taking action to regulate mountaintop mining, a form of mining that destroys streams by burying them under tons of rock and dirt.
Reducing mercury and other toxic pollution: Air pollution from power plants, cement plants and other sources causes asthma, heart disease and cancer, and also ends up in our water, contaminating fish and causing learning disabilities in children far from the air pollution’s sources. The House budget bill would forbid EPA from taking action to reduce these pollutants.
Reducing carbon pollution: Curbing global warming pollution is critical for protecting our health, our communities and our water resources. We are already seeing impacts of climate change on our water quantity and quality, but the House budget would prevent EPA from doing anything to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

TAKE ACTION NOW! Tell Congress not to block critical protections for our water, our air and our health!
