In July, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the “Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act.” This bill would turn back the clock on the clean water progress we have made since the Clean Water Act first passed in 1972. It would dismantle the federal and state partnership that has protected our water for the last 40 years. Find out how your Representative voted.
The bill is now moving onto the Senate. Make sure the Summer of Dirty Water stops there.
Since the Clean Water Act became law in 1972, it has been accepted that the federal government as a responsibility for cleaning up and protecting our precious water resources. Some Members of Congress are determined to undermine this responsibility and the result will be more pollution. We also need to tell our elected officials not to support bad "policy riders" that are attached to 2012 Appropriations (spending) bills.
Our work to protect the Clean Water Act isn't just about opposing bad bills in Congress. We need to support positive progress too. For much of the last decade, Clean Water Action has worked to restore Clean Water Act protections put in jeopardy by policies of the previous Administration. Current policies threaten important streams and wetlands that filter pollution and prevent flooding and the drinking water for more than 117 million Americans is vulnerable.
Clean water is essential for healthy people. Dirty water is bad for our communities and kills jobs. The “Dirty Water Caucus” is hard at work. Your voice makes a difference.
