Tell Congress To Pass the Gulf Coast Civic Recovery Act

I am writing to ask for your support in passing the Gulf Coast Civic Work Act (GCCWA).

Community and student movements have called this legislation an extremely important shift in policy – a shift that we voted for this past November when we voted for “change we can believe in”.

I am writing to ask for your support in passing the H.R. 2269: Gulf Coast Civic Work Act (GCCWA). Community and student movements have called this legislation an extremely important shift in policy – a shift that we voted for this past November when we voted for “change we can believe in”.

GCCWA forms a new commitment to help revitalize the Gulf Coast region and the survivors of the worst natural disaster in US history. GCCWA will create over 100,000 green jobs. These “green jobs” are exactly what Congress and the President promised when they passed the recent Stimulus Act; with the goal to form a new economy that supports sustainable growth, new jobs to replace those devastated in the economic downturn, and the rebuilding of communities most in need I believe that GCCWA is the one of the most important pieces of legislation before Congress today. Passing this legislation is an easy first step to bringing powerful improvements to the most crippled region in America.

GCCWA will deliver on this commitment in several key areas:

    * It rebuilds and repairs vital infrastructure including schools, police and fire stations, hospitals, parks, roads, water and sewer systems, workforce housing, and cultural centers;
    * It builds equitable flood protection and restores natural flood protection. Natural defenses like barrier islands, marshes and wetlands defend the livelihoods of coastal families and billions of dollars of Gulf Coast commerce.;
    * It enhances energy efficiency and conservation to save on energy costs and eliminate carbon emissions to better protect vulnerable populations from the effects of climate change;
    * It serves as a national model for building on the strength of community action and engaging residents in disaster recovery and sustainable economic development.

Three years after the devastating hurricane, the survivors in the Gulf Coast are still looking for their government to help them rebuild their lives.  These voters were part of the huge numbers who swelled to the polls, and voted for “change they could believe in”. It is now up to Congress to make that change happen.

Now is the time to enact legislation that will have broad support across the region and bring back life to an area that has seen devastation, empty promises and heartache.

Congress must act now to bring jobs, resources and mobilize community involvement into rebuilding of the Gulf Coast.   Please act now to support the Gulf Coast Civic Work Act (GCCWA).
