Thousands of families in New Orleans are facing homelessness this holiday season because of a terrible collision of public policies that includes FEMA kicking families out of trailers and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) demolishing hundreds of stable, affordable housing units.

Call or send an email to Louisiana Senator David Vitter and the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee that they need to support Senate Bill 1668: The Gulf Coast Recovery Act.

Let them know the nation is watching.

Demand a stop to the demolitions and passage of SB 1668, because housing is a human right that needs protection NOW!

S. 1668 would restore hope to thousands of displaced families by restoring affordable housing opportunities and assisting homeowners in their efforts to rebuild. In New Orleans, among other fixes, the bill will require that full replacement of units demolished by HUD. In Louisiana, the bill would pave the way for a Road Home Program that works. For all areas damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the bill will ensure continued housing assistance for families. Reform is certainly needed in the public housing system, but it must be focused on the way that HANO and HUD have essentially served as a slum lord, taking residents' rent money and public dollars while failing to provide residents with decent housing. Crime and drug use are certainly not restricted to public housing in New Orleans or anywhere else. Closing public housing does not solve problems like crime and drug use. In fact, there has been an increase in these problems in New Orleans post-Katrina when the largest public housing developments in the city remain shuttered since the mandatory evacuation took place. Although it has been more than two years since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the Gulf Coast, the housing crisis they left behind remains intact. The right to housing is a human right. Please support S. 1668 and help protect this right for the tens of thousands of people who face permanent displacement if Congress does not act. Thank you for your consideration,
