Support Permanence Legislation for the National Landscape Conservation System!
The western United States, with its vast deserts, rugged mountains, and majestic forests and wilderness, is home to some of the best known, wildest, and most stunning examples of Gods handiwork. In June 2000, the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) - the most innovative American land protection system created in the last 50 years - was established to encompass the public lands managed by the
Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This new conservation system consists of more than 26 million acres, and includes: national monuments, National Conservation Areas, wilderness, Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, and National and Scenic Trails. However, without an act of Congress, the System enjoys no permanent protection.
The national treasures comprising the National Landscape Conservation System—including magnificent forests and rivers that provide critical wildlife habitat—can be and should be unified in a unified system of protected lands. HR 2016 would:
- Provide a congressional stamp of approval for the System, designated presidentially in 2000. The legislation congressionally recognizes the existing System, thereby acknowledging its importance to America’s cultural and natural history and helping to ensure appropriate conservation management
- Ensure permanence. Congress would leave an enduring legacy of the West’s natural and cultural heritage with its support.
- Enhance the system’s stature with the Department of Interior. The system’s outstanding values deserve the same prestige as the department’s other public lands systems, such as national parks or wildlife refuges. This bill will help ensure a strong conservation mandate for the BLM.
Lands, wilderness, and open spaces have always been central to the Judeo-Christian tradition, playing a vital role in the spiritual journeys of Biblical individuals from Moses to Jesus Christ. Your email today will help ensure the lands under the National Landscape Conservation System will be permanently protected within a system whose primary purpose is conservation.
Ask your member of Congress to support and vote for, the National Landscape Conservation Act-HR 2016, by either calling or sending them an email.
