Support Clean Air, Less Carbon

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a new standard that would mean cleaner air and a cleaner Creation by limiting carbon dioxide emissions from new power plants.

For God's children and Creation to have a safe and healthy future, the U.S. must decrease our carbon footprint and help stop climate change. Take Action.

Dear Administrator Jackson – 
As a person of faith, I am writing in support of the new source performance standards for carbon dioxide emissions from new power plants (Docket number EPA–HQ–OAR–2011–0660).

Christian teachings call on us to serve as stewards of God’s good Earth and seek justice for our neighbors, particularly the most vulnerable among us. Setting standards for carbon emissions from new power plants will not only improve the health and welfare of communities and people around the United States but will also have a direct impact on the long-term well-being of our neighbors overseas.

Setting a standard to reduce carbon emissions from new power plants will help reduce air pollution and slow climate change. As noted in the Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA) 2009 endangerment finding, carbon dioxide is a threat to the health and well-being of communities around the US. Carbon dioxide is linked to increased levels of asthma, increased ozone levels and more frequent and severe heat waves. These impacts have a disproportionate impact on communities of color, youth, the elderly and those living in poverty. In most cases these communities are least responsible for increased levels of carbon dioxide emissions as they use less energy and electricity than others.

In addition to the positive human health impacts we will feel in the United States, the proposed rule will help those living in poverty around the world, particularly in vulnerable developing nations that are already suffering from the impacts of climate change. Greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, are the main contributor to global climate change which threatens the health of communities and the future of God’s Creation.

By setting a strong standard for carbon dioxide emissions from new power plants, we are ensuring future reductions in US carbon emissions. I support EPA's proposal and ask that the final rule be at least as strong as the proposed rule set forth in this docket.
