Americans for Safe Access (ASA) Chief Counsel Joe Elford will be having a special conference call for members of our Legal Support Team this Thursday, July 12, at 6:00 PM PDT. ASA’s Legal Support Team is a small group of activists who are making sure we can keep fighting for rescheduling and other important battles in court. Legal Support Team members are pledging $100 per month for eighteen months to support our federal legal actions.

You know already that we must change federal law in order to protect patients, cultivators, and providers from federal enforcement, even in states where medical cannabis is legal. The Drug Enforcement Administration keeps raiding cultivators and providers, and the Department of Justice is intimidating providers and lawmakers in several states. Congress is stalled on this issue, but there is another way to break the impasse: federal court.

ASA is fighting a long battle to remove medical cannabis from the federal list of dangerous drugs with no medical value.  Last year, we appealed the Administration’s decision to deny our nine-year old rescheduling petition. This appeal may lead to the first evidentiary hearings of the medical value of cannabis since 1994 – and a lot has happened since then!

Our rescheduling lawsuit is one offensive in the battle for safe access to medical cannabis, but we are fighting on another front, too. Our groundbreaking 10th Amendment lawsuit seeks to bar the federal government from commandeering the law making authority of the states to block safe access to medical cannabis. This lawsuit may finally end federal interference and intimidation that keeps medicine away from patients.

ASA can make this happen. We have a strong legal team and recognized expertise in the field. We also have a comprehensive plan to use media, legislation, and strategic grassroots organizing to get the most out of these lawsuits. Victory could be a turning point towards safe access to medical cannabis nationwide. But we need your help right now to get it done.

These two lawsuits will take as long as two years and cost over $300,000. That is why we need you to join the Legal Support Team by pledging to donate $100 per month to ASA for eighteen months. Team members will be invited to quarterly calls with Chief Counsel Joe Elford to get inside updates on the cases, receive briefs the day they are filed, and be listed on ASAʼs website and publications as a member of the Legal Support Team (if you wish).
