Urge your Congressional Representative to Support Medical Marijuana Legislation

November 07, 2009 Subject: I am writing to urge your support on HR 2835, a bill that would allow states to set their own laws on medical marijuana without risking federal interference. Currently, thirteen states have laws permitting bona-fide patients with a doctor’s recommendation to use marijuana where other medicines have failed. The body of literature demonstrating marijuana has medical value is vast. Even the IOM, in their 1999 analysis of the medical literature, reports “the accumulated data suggest a variety of indications, particularly for pain relief, anti-emesis, and appetite stimulation. For patients, such as those with AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy, who suffer simultaneously from severe pain, nausea, and appetite loss, cannabinoid drugs might thus offer broad spectrum relief not found in any other single medication.”[pg 177] Numerous medical organizations remain steadfast in their support of medical marijuana. These organizations include the American College of Physicians, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Nurses Association, the American Public Health Association, the National Association of People with AIDS, AIDS Institute, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Kaiser Permanente, and several state medical associations. A complete list can be made available to you and your staff. In addition, a growing number of Faith Based organizations have opened their hearts and doors to thousands of patients in need of compassion. Faith-based organizations supporting legal access to medical marijuana or state discretion include the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the National Council of Churches, the Progressive National Baptist Convention, the Presbyterian Church, the Union for Reform Judaism, the United Church of Christ, the Unitarian-Universalist Association, and United Methodist Church. The bottom line is marijuana is medicine. It is time that Congress do something. Passing sensible, compassionate legislation that allows states to do what they think is right without federal interference is a first start. Again, I urge your support on HR 2835.
