May 17, 2012 Subject: Dear Chairman Conyers: Dear Chairman Conyers: Thank you for the December 7 statement pledging to question DEA about their recent tactics that threaten landlords with asset forfeiture for leasing property to medical marijuana providers as permitted by state and local law. I appreciate your commitment to investigating the DEA’s actions threatening the safety and security of state-sanctioned patients, providers, and innocent third-party landlords. Since the DEA began raiding medical cannabis dispensing collectives in 2002, Congress has never held an independent investigation concerning the purpose of DEA’s law enforcement activities in California, what and how much limited resource is being used to conduct raids of bona-fide medical marijuana patients and care providers, and what impact these raids are having on patients and the state and local governments attempting to regulate and control access. As a taxpayer and citizen I am deeply concerned with this issue and urge you to work with medical marijuana patients and advocates to move forward with congressional hearings. In addition to questioning DEA during regular oversight, I am asking you to consider a comprehensive investigation concerning DEA's activity in California and in other medical marijuana jurisdictions in order to ensure that individuals who are in compliance with state and local regulations are not targeted by federal raids, imprisonment or threats of asset forfeiture. Thank you and your hard working staff members again for the commitment to scrutinize the DEA’s recent and ongoing tactics.
