Pass the Kids Safe Chemicals Act!
November 20, 2009
Subject:
Dear Member of Congress,
The nation’s toxic chemical regulatory law, The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), is in drastic need of reform. Hardly a day goes by without publicity about a new toxic chemical that poses significant health risks, especially to infants, children, and other vulnerable populations. Yet even as our knowledge about these dangers grows, the government has almost no authority to protect people from even the most hazardous substances, as recently highlighted in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/06/opinion/06sat4.html?_r=1&ref=opinion&oref=slogin). Our children need Congress to pass the Kids Safe Chemicals Act (H.R. 6100 and S. 3040), which will amend the law by: • Putting the burden of testing chemical safety on the manufacturers. • Granting the EPA the authority to protect the public by prohibiting distribution of products until after they have been proven safe. • Making the chemical screening process and safety determinations available to the public in a centralized online database. • Requiring the EPA to review "priority" chemicals, which include all synthetic substances found in people, on an accelerated schedule. Congressional action is urgently needed to protect our nation’s most sensitive inhabitants from exposure to toxic chemicals. Please provide our children with this much-needed protection by supporting the Kids Safe Chemicals Act (H.R. 6100 and S. 3040). Thank you,
