As my faith tradition teaches me to welcome the stranger and treat each human with respect and dignity, I ask that you work to enact humane and equitable immigration reform in 2009. The faith community in the United States bears daily witness to the consequences of our broken immigration system in our congregations, service programs, and schools, and we need an end to the suffering caused by our immigration policies with no further delay.

As my representative, I am asking for your help to ensure the following elements are included in a comprehensive immigration proposal:

*      Decrease the waiting time of families separated due to lengthy visa backlogs;
*      Create a process for undocumented immigrants to earn legal status and eventual citizenship;
*      Protect all workers' rights and create safe and legal entry for new migrant workers;
*      Empower immigrants to fully integrate by providing financial support to local governments and community organizations that are offering civics and language instruction; and
*      Ensure that enforcement measures are in line with our country’s humanitarian values and that we use our resources to enforce a working immigration system.

The faith community works with our immigrant neighbors daily and recognizes their economic and social contributions to our society. We hope you recognize this as well and work to make sure the 111th Congress enacts immigration reform based on the tenets of family unity, justice, and humane treatment of all persons.
