Expand Critical Habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal
Thank you to the thousands of supporters who took action and shared this alert before the August 31, 2011 deadline!
You can still sign the petition below to be added to our list of supporters for increasing Hawaiian monk seal protections.
Fewer than 1,170 individual Hawaiian monk seals are left in the world today. Habitat degradation,
commercial fishing bycatch, and entanglement in marine debris are driving these rare marine mammals towards extinction. Without bold action to increase their protected habitat, they may disappear forever from our planet.
Support Protected Habitat on the Main Hawaiian Islands
Hawaiian monk seal mothers are moving east from remote islands into the populated Main Hawaiian Islands to give birth on what are now unprotected beaches. The proposed critical habitat expansion would make these beaches safer. A total of 11,000 square miles of coastal and marine habitat for Hawaiian monk seals could be protected!
