Congress has rejected funding for new nuclear weapons for the past two years, requiring the new administration to complete a review of US nuclear weapons policy this year. Funding decisions should wait until the review is completed and a direction for US nuclear policy has been set. November 21, 2009 Subject: The Senate Appropriations Committee's decision to add $1 billion for the nuclear weapons complex to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (S.336) is short-sighted on a number of levels. As a supporter of Peace Action West, I agree with removing the $1 billion in funding for the nuclear weapons complex from the economic stimulus plan. There is little assurance that the $1 billion in funding in the economic stimulus plan will go to programs that address security threats like nuclear terrorism. The Department of Energy spends more than 67 percent of its budget on nuclear weapons. At a time when our president has embraced a vision of a nuclear weapons free world, I urge you to work to remove this wasteful spending from the bill in the Senate version or the conference committee.
