As a supporter of Massachusetts Peace Action, you may not realize that you are also a part of the largest grassroots peace organization in the United States -- and that our national office needs your support. Massachusetts Peace Action is one of 32 state affiliates of national Peace Action, based in Silver Spring, Maryland. Together we total over 100,000 members. That is an impressive figure when we are lobbying for peace and disarmament in the halls of Congress.
Peace Action is the descendant of SANE (founded in 1957) and the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign (founded in Massachusetts in 1981). Together these groups played a key role in ending above-ground testing of nuclear weapons in 1963, opposing the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 70s, and ending the Cold War during the 1980s and 90s. Recently, we've worked to end the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, prevent war with Iran and North Korea, reduce and eventually abolish nuclear weapons, and move the money from military spending to human needs. Rep. Ed Markey’s bill to save $100 billion by cutting nuclear weapons spending is called the SANE Act in tribute to our organization’s role. Despite these accomplishments, the loss of a single major donor this past year has led to a significant budget shortfall in the national office. The loss of three staff members, all young leaders in the movement, must be reversed – and we in Massachusetts can help.
It costs money to keep the national office running, and the national does not have the continuous membership support that the state affiliates have. A small portion of your Massachusetts membership dues are paid to the national organization -- but that's not nearly enough to cover the national's basic operation costs. The national organization depends on individuals sending additional contributions -- but we can't afford to become too dependent on a small number of major donors. Here's where you can help!
You can also send donations to Massachusetts Peace Action Education Fund, 11 Garden St, Cambridge, MA 02138. Mark "National office" on the memo line. Thanks!
