Take the Abolition Pledge

I pledge to act to abolish the death penalty - because the execution of Troy Davis by the state of Georgia in September 2011 violates my beliefs in the sacredness of God’s creation.

I pledge to pray to abolish the death penalty - because the death penalty violates my personal theological and moral beliefs.

I pledge to educate people on the need to abolish the death penalty - because racial bias, class bias, geographic bias, errors, prosecutorial misconduct, and other factors influence death sentences.

I pledge to mobilize people to act to abolish the death penalty - because there are innocent people on death row and more than 135 innocent people have been exonerated and released from death row so far.

I pledge to lobby to repeal the death penalty permanently - because there are many Troy Davises on death row.

I pledge to financially support groups working to end the death penalty - because hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars are spent every year pursuing death sentences instead of helping victims' families and preventing violence and because national and state grassroots abolition groups face huge challenges with small budgets.

I pledge to act to abolish the death penalty - because in conscience I shall not allow another execution in my name.

From Troy Davis:

“Thank you and remember I am in a place where execution can only destroy your physical form but because of my faith in God, my family and all of you I have been spiritually free for some time and no matter what happens in the days, weeks to come, this movement to end the death penalty, to seek true justice, to expose a system that fails to protect the innocent must be accelerated. There are so many more Troy Davises…. We need to dismantle this unjust system city by city, state by state and country by country. I can’t wait to stand with you, no matter if that is in physical or spiritual form.”
