Urge President Obama to Invest in Clean Energy and Discourage Dirty Fuels in U.S. Refinery Communities
Oil refineries produce toxic pollution and climate changing emissions. While we all recognize that we need to invest in clean energy, refineries across the US are going the opposite way by expanding their polluting facilities, with a number of them planning to use one of the dirtiest crude oils available – tar sands from Canada.
Fenceline communities across the U.S. want the promise of clean, sustainable energy to reach them. Tar sands crude is a step in the wrong direction.
Tar sands:
-will increase pollution in already overburdened fenceline communities, often low income and people of color, with greater risks of childhood asthma, cancer, and neurological disorders
-generates 3 times the greenhouse gases and 2.5 the smog creating pollution compared to conventional oil
-requires about 3 barrels of fresh water to extract just 1 barrel of fuel
-threatens one of the planet’s largest forest ecosystems, the Boreal Forest
