Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Fairness, respect and marriage equality - that's the Maine way and that's what Mainers from all over say in this ad that we rolled out yesterday, along with our partners the EqualityMaine Foundation and Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders.

We've been working together for four years engaging Mainers in this conversation - about what marriage equality means for people like Rita and Sara Jane, who worry about what will happen to their pensions and Social Security when one of them pre-deceases the other.  Or Terry and Tamiko, whose children need to know that their family is as respected as anyone's.  Or Jim and Steve, together for 33 years, who look forward to the day when they can affirm their relationship in the way that everyone recognizes - by getting married.

This ad features real Mainers - gay and straight - talking about the values that a majority of Mainers share in the context of marriage equality.  This is the same kind of education that worked in obtaining a legislative victory in which at least 50,000 equality supporters contacted their legislators.

This is the first ad about marriage to appear on Maine television.  We know that campaign ads, both for and against the referendum, will follow.  That is why it is so important that we have been able to talk about marriage in the context of Maine values.

The ad started broadcasting all across the state yesterday, as well as online.   We hope the ad helps more and more Mainers think deeply about this issue and discuss it with their neighbors and friends.

Thank you for all you do to support equality,
Alysia, Brianna, Claire, Edward, Katy, Shenna, Zach
