Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Opponents of marriage for gay and lesbian couples announced that they've hired Schubert Flint, the firm behind Prop 8 in California. Schubert Flint is partnering with National Petition Management, a paid signature gathering firm to place marriage on Maine's ballot in November. Their goal is to overturn the law we passed this spring to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Fearmongering may have worked in California, but it won't work here.

I have spent the last six weeks with our coalition partners planning a comprehensive, statewide campaign to ensure that everyone, including gay and lesbian couples and their children, are guaranteed equal protection under the law. We've hired an amazing campaign manager, Jesse Connolly. Jesse led the successful 2005 Maine Won't Discriminate campaign as well as Governor John Baldacci's re-election campaign. Most recently, he worked as chief of staff for Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, Hannah Pingree.
