Please call the Governor at (207) 287-3531 and urge him to sign into law repeal of Maine's REAL ID. The Senate just enacted LD 1357 "An Act to Protect the Privacy of Maine Residents Under the Driver's License Laws"! This bill, which would repeal Maine's REAL ID, passed both the House and the Senate thanks to the telephone calls and e-mails sent by so many of you.
Now the bill goes to the Governor's desk for signature. But in yesterday's Press Herald, the Governor's office suggested an unwillingness to sign. With his signature, LD 1357 would become law, sending a strong message to our federal government that we reject REAL ID. With his signature, LD 1357 will put an end to implementation of biometrics technology like facial recognition screening for the Maine driver's license. With his signature, LD 1357 would instantly resolve problems for everyday Mainers trying to obtain their licenses. The lawful presence requirement has resulted in Mainers from all over the state being subjected to delays and denials at the BMV. One seventy-year old woman from Aroostook County has been forced to apply for a green card because she was born in a hospital just across the Canadian border even though her father was an American! Please contact Gov. Baldacci and urging him to SIGN LD 1357 into law. 207-287-3531 Remind him of how important this bill is to remedying the serious privacy, equal protection and bureaucratic problems created by last year's bill which implemented portions of the Federal REAL ID law. CONTACT THE GOVERNOR NOW and tell him privacy and equal protection under the law are vital to Mainers!
