Were you ever sent to the principal's office as a kid? Have your children ever been held after school for detention? The Maine Department of Education is now requiring that schools report ALL the names of students involved in any incident of prohibited behavior for collection in a central, permanent database. A school detention or suspension shouldn't stay with a student for the rest of his or her life. We are working to pass Senator Alfond's bill, An Act to Protect Student Privacy while Complying with Federal Law (LD 725), with the hope that an incident committed by a child will not follow her or him indefinitely. The bill would prohibit schools from disclosing the names of students involved in prohibited behaviors to the state or any other entity except when required to do so by federal law. We're organizing students, parents, teachers, and school leaders to testify at the public hearing on Monday, April 6th, at 9am before the Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs. Can you take time out to come to Augusta to support student privacy? Would you be interested in submitting testimony? Get in touch with Brianna in our office (774-5444, btwofoot@mclu.org) for more information on how to be involved. Don't have time to come to Augusta? Send a message of support for the bill to members of the Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs: Thanks for all that you do, Alex, Alysia, Brianna, Edward, Katy, Marian, Shenna, Zach If you would like to unsubscribe from this list, please reply to this email with "unsubscribe" in the subject line. |
