Are you tired of federal abuses of power? Fed up with a President, a Supreme Court, and most recently, a Congress stomping on our constitutional rights? Friday is Independence Day. Let's declare our allegiance to the Fourth Amendment right to privacy while we're saluting the flag. We have four ways you can help bring back the Fourth Amendment on the Fourth:
- Petition: Sign up for a hour or two to gather just fifteen or thirty signatures for Repeal of REAL ID. We need signature gatherers at Fourth of July festivities across the state. Can you dedicate just two hours to gathering 15 to 30 signatures? Contact Alex or Brianna at 774-5444 to get your Fourth of July packet.
- Shake Hands with Senators Collins and Snowe at the Local Parade: Senators Snowe and Collins will be home for the holiday, and they may be marching in a parade near you. Urge them to stop the FISA surveillance and telecom immunity bill. When you shake their hand, ask them to support Senators Dodd and Feingold in amendments to improve the nightmarish FISA surveillance and telecom immunity bill. (FISA is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.) Let us know what they say! If you see Congressmen Allen and Michaud, please thank them for their opposition to immunity and the FISA expansion bill.
- Exercise Free Speech: Write a letter to the editor about REAL ID repeal or FISA. Go to www.mclu.org for talking points.
- March in your local parade carrying a sign urging "Repeal REAL ID" or "Stop Spying Without Warrants". See if you can get photographed for the local newspaper. Send us the photos. We've got some signs in the office if you want to stop by this week.
