The MCLU supports workplace giving through MaineShare

Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

On Friday the House of Representatives caved on FISA, giving the President expansive wiretapping surveillance powers and giving the telecoms immunity from any prior lawbreaking.  It was a dark moment for the Fourth Amendment and our Constitution.  The only silver lining is that a brave few including Representatives Tom Allen and Mike Michaud voted no.  They stood up for Mainers' privacy and the Constitution.

This week the bill goes to the Senate for final passage.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Presidential Candidate Barack Obama have suggested that they will try to strip the immunity provision out of the bill.

What will Senators Collins and Snowe do?  Will they uphold and defend the Constitution by voting no to the new FISA spying and immunity bill?  Or will they be complicit in a cover up of the President's illegal wiretapping?  Will they stop the Maine privacy complaint in its tracks so we never get answers?

Please call them now!  Tell them to vote no to FISA expansion and vote no to immunity:

Senator Collins:  (202) 224-2523
Senator Snowe:  (202) 224-5344
Senator Harry Reid: (202) 224-3542
Senator Barack Obama:  (202) 224-2854
Senator John McCain:  (202) 224-2235

Mainers deserve to know if their privacy was violated by Verizon and the National Security Agency.  We don't seek monetary damages or retribution - merely a court injunction to prevent warrantless wiretapping of millions of Americans without probable cause from ever happening again.

Our elected officials swear to uphold and defend the United States Constitution.  The FISA spying and immunity vote this week will be a test of their commitment to that oath.

Thank you for all that you do,
Alex, Brianna, Ed, Marian, Shenna and Zach
