THIS FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2008, is the six-year anniversary of the first arrival of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. On January 11, we are calling on everyone opposed to torture and indefinite detention to WEAR ORANGE to symbolize their sadness and disgust with the national shame that is Guantanamo Bay. For six years Guantanamo Bay has violated the rights of its detainees, including children, in horrific and shameful ways. Omar Khadr, having been detained at the age of fifteen and remaining in custody for a total of five years to date, has spent ¼ of his life at Guantanamo. Four detainees have died in custody, including 16 year old Yasser Talal Al Zahrani, who allegedly committed suicide. Constitutionally guaranteed rights, including the right to due process of law and habeas corpus, have been denied to every prisoner at Guantanamo. Make your statement against these civil liberties and human rights violations by wearing orange, or sporting an orange armband that may be obtained at the MCLU Annual Meetings tonight (January 9th) in Portland, tomorrow night (January 10th) in Bangor, or by stopping by the office during the day on Thursday or Friday. PORTLAND 6 pm- 8 pm The MCLU, along with at least 5 other organizations, are sending a letter urging the Congressional Delegation of Maine to use their positions to help close Guantanamo. Use the power of your signature and sign a petition here. Thanks for all that you do,
Alex, Brianna, Edward, Marian, Shenna, and Zach
