Dear friends, This is the last action alert I'll send from the Maine Civil Liberties Union. Next week, I start my new job as Media Relations Associate at the ACLU National Office in New York City. Thanks for everything you've done over the last few years to help protect civil liberties in Maine and the nation. As I sign over my post, I have one last request: Help us protect phone customer privacy by calling Senators Snowe and Collins and urging them to hold telecommunications companies accountable for violating your privacy rights. Tell them to oppose telecom immunity in the updated FISA bill. No accountability? NO WAY. Call today! Senator Snowe: (800) 432-1599 Would you let a major company off the hook for breaking a law it pledged to uphold? We wouldn't either, but the Senate might. Right now the Senate is weighing whether to give telecommunications companies immunity for their role the government's warrantless surevillance program. Call Snowe and Collins today and tell them to oppose telecom immunity. Mark Klein, the former AT&T employee who first uncovered evidence that the telecom gave the National Security Agency access to its equipment so the government could spy on phone customers without a warrant, is on Capitol Hill this week to lobby against telecom immunity. You can read the New York Times coverage of his story here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/07/us/07nsa.html?ref=us Mark Klein never expected to get wrapped up in this fight, and maybe you didn't either. But he can't do it alone- Call today! Senator Snowe: (800) 432-1599 To learn more about the warrantless surveillance program, go here: http://www.aclu.org/safefree/spying/ The government has been spying without a warrant, and the telecoms have been helping. Don't let them off the hook! Thanks for all you do. It's been a pleasure working with you. Sincerely, Rachel L. Myers |
