The MCLU supports workplace giving through MaineShare

Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Dear friends,

We're not going to give up, and we know you won't either.

There's a silver lining in the horrible bill that passed over the weekend legalizing warrantless surveillance: the bill only gives the President expanded powers for six months.  In early February, Congress will choose whether or not to restore our Fourth Amendment right to privacy.  We're going to do everything we can to ensure that Congress chooses the Constitution.

The President is banking on fear and apathy.  He figures that since Congress caved to the pressure in August, they'll do so again in February.  But we're not going to let him get away with it!

Please join us in taking action to protect the Constitution and restore checks and balances.  Here's how:

1. I Spy a Senator.  The entire Congressional delegation will be home in Maine in August.  They will be out and about.  Join us in not being shy about bending their ears.  Let's educate them every time we see them about the importance of the Fourth Amendment.  Scold Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe for voting for this bill.  Thank Congressmen Tom Allen and Mike Michaud for voting against it.  Report back to the MCLU on what they say.

2. Infiltrate the Media.  We plan to create a drumbeat of support for the Constitution in every Maine paper with letters to the editor.  Can you commit to writing just one letter to your paper in the next six months?  We'll provide you with guidelines and talking points.  It's a fun, easy way to make your voice heard.  Respond to this email if you're interested.

3. Compile Privacy Dossiers on the Congressional Delegation.  If they're going to monitor our private conversations, let's monitor their public ones.  Every time a Maine member of Congress speaks about warrantless surveillance in public, we want to know about it.  You can help by sending us media clippings whenever Snowe, Collins, Allen or Michaud mentions surveillance in the news. We'll compile our own spy files on each of them to make sure that they don't say one thing in Maine and do another in Washington.

Send clippings to mcluintern@gmail.com with the subject line "FISA news" or by regular mail to Rachel Myers, MCLU, 401 Cumberland Ave. Suite 105, Portland, ME 04101

Thanks in advance for helping us to end the abuse of power and save the Constitution.  Together we can make it happen.

Thanks for all you do,
Rachel
