Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.
Dear friends,
Looking for a fun new activity? Wondering what YOU can do to help stop the government from trampling all over your rights? We've got just the thing!
This summer, the MCLU is offering up all sorts of ways to get involved and make change happen.
1. Help us celebrate fair and festival season! The MCLU is taking advantage of the beautiful weather to hit the road. We'll be tabling and speaking at events all over the state and you're invited to come along and help us out. Tabling is lots of fun: it's a great way to meet new people, help spread the word about our work to protect civil liberties, and soak up some sun all at the same time!
Here's where we'll be:
Cumberland County: PeaceFest, Portland Eastern Promenade, Saturday July 14th 1-4pm: We'll be handing out information on our campaign to stop the abuse of power and restore civil liberties.
Hancock County: WERU Full Circle Fair, Blue Hill Fairgrounds, July 28-29: We'll have a table, and Shenna Bellows will speak Sunday, July 29 at 12:00 pm on the Voices Stage.
Waldo County: Common Ground Country Fair, Unity, September 21-23: A Maine favorite! We'll have a table in the Social Action tent every day.
If you're interested in volunteering at one of these events, contact Helen at mcluintern@gmail.com.
Don't see a location near you? Want to help the MCLU come to YOUR town? Drop Helen a line and we'll see what we can do!
2. Exercise your *writes* Our fabulous summer intern is hard at work putting together a volunteer media team. It's a great way to volunteer from home- anywhere in the state!
We provide topics, talking points and guidelines. You write regular letters to the editor of your local paper on important civil liberties issues and help us monitor the papers and blogs for local civil liberties news.
3. Save the Date August 30, 6:30 pm, Rockland Public Library Shenna Bellows will give a speech entitled "False Security: The Erosion of Civil Liberties since 9/11" Please come out and say hello.
Those are just three of the many ways you can help the MCLU this summer. We bet there are many more! If you're interested in volunteering, please send Helen an email at mcluintern@gmail.com or giver her a call at 207-774-5444.
Together, we can make this a winning summer for civil liberties and have some fun in the process! Thanks, and enjoy the sunshine.
Sincerely, Rachel
