Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Dear friends,

Yesterday we asked you to send an email to members of the Judiciary Committee urging them to vote Yes on three civil liberties bills.  Your response was so overwhelming that we got calls from the committee members commenting on the volume of emails they were receiving!  That's GREAT news because it sends the message to our legislators that people who care about civil liberties are paying attention.

Thoughout the year we try our best to stick to one action alert per week.  But some weeks in Augusta are so busy that they call for twice as much action, and this is one of those weeks.  In fact, it's the last full week of work sessions in the Maine Legislature, so there are LOTS of bills being considered- and many of them will have an effect on our civil liberties.  So here's one more way you can take action this week to protect and advance civil liberties in Maine:

Take Action to Save Net Neutrality!
This week the Maine Legislature Committee on Utilities and Energy will vote on LD 1675, "An Act to Protect Network Neutrality."  This bill would reinstate much needed net neutrality principles in Maine.

Net neutrality is like the First Amendment of the Internet.  It means a free and open internet, the freedom to choose what content you read and what applications you use, and that internet users can access a homegrown blog from Maine just as easily as a giant corporate site.  Learn more here: http://www.aclu.org/freespeech/internet/26816res20060925.html

Maine legislators report they are being flooded with calls and letters from Verizon and TimeWarner, companies that want to eliminate net neutrality for good.  The committee needs to hear from you- help us stand up to the telecomm giants by contacting members of the Utilities and Energy committee today and urging them to restore net neutrality in Maine by voting yes on LD 1675. Restoring net neutrality in Maine is essential to protecting Mainers from discrimination and censorship.  The internet has always been an arena of democracy where every person could speak up and be heard-- together we can keep it that way!  Go here to send a message to the committee today: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/mclu/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=11376

Thanks for working extra hard this week to protect civil liberties!

Take care,
Rachel
