Dear friends,

With your help, Maine became the first state in the nation to reject Real ID when the legislature passed an anti-Real ID resolution in January. The resolution passed with overwhelming bipartisan support because you all contacted your legislators and urged them to say no to Real ID. It was an exciting time for us as civil libertarians and as Mainers- but it was just the beginning!

Representative Scott Lansley has introduced LD 1138, An Act to Prohibit Maine from Participating in a National Identification Card System, which would make Maine's opposition to Real ID official. By signing our opposition into law, we can make sure that the Secretary of State and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles won't take steps to implement a de facto national ID card.

There is a public hearing on LD 1138 TOMORROW, and we hope you can attend! By packing the room with people who think Real ID is a bad idea, we can remind our legislators just how important this issue is. Real ID remains a privacy nightmare and an identity thief's dream. Mainers should take all the steps we can to keep Real ID out of our state!
