Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

"We write to express our profound concern about recent revelations that the United States Government may be engaged in domestic electronic surveillance without appropriate legal authority.  These allegations, which the President, at least in part, confirmed this weekend require immediate inquiry and action by the Senate."
-from a bipartisan letter signed by Senator Olympia Snowe,
December, 2005

Dear friends,

The 109th Congress is back for a "lame duck" session.  On November 7th, America sent the message loud and clear that we will not stand for Congressional leaders who sit back and let the administration stomp all over our civil liberties.  We elected a new breed of leaders who say they will stand up to the abuse of power in Washington.  But until they take office, we must hold the current Congress accountable to the law and to the voice of the American people.

In a recent press conference Bush said he was ready to put partisan politics aside and refocus on the most important issues facing our nation.  Apparently he thinks invading your privacy is one of those issues.  If Bush has his way, one of the last acts of the 109th Congress will be to pass a law to legalize and expand his illegal NSA wiretapping program.

Mainers value their rights- like the 21 folks who filed a complaint with the Public Utilities Commission to find out if Verizon was violating Maine privacy law.  If Congress rubberstamps the NSA program, not only will the voices of those 21 Mainers be silenced, but the telecom companies will be granted immunity and allowed to continue handing over your records to the government without your permission.

Hold Senator Snowe to her word, and tell Senator Collins to join her.  Call today!

Senator Collins:

Here are the most important things to tell them:

•Americans have had enough of the unethical legacy of the 109th Congress. Immunizing the telecommunications companies that participated in warrantless spying is unethical because it denies proper oversight.

•Please use all means necessary to block attempts by this Congress to pass legislation that undermines the Constitution and American values such as checks and balances and the rule of law.

•The American people have spoken, and Bush says he will act in a bipartisan manner.  Current proposals to rubberstamp NSA spying are a capitulation to the Bush administration, NOT bipartisan compromise.

•Congress needs to know the facts before legislating. Please investigate warrantless spying by the NSA as soon as possible.

Americans have called for change, and we don't have to wait until next year to see it start happening.  Don't let authorizing an illegal wiretapping program be the legacy of the 109th Congress.  Please take action by calling today.

Thanks for all you do.

Best,
Rachel
