Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself.

Got a second?  There’s plenty to do!

For your civil liberties pleasure, here’s a whole variety pack of action you can take today.

Net Neutrality
Preserve the internet as a free marketplace of ideas!  Senator Snowe has taken a leading role on this issue, but Senator Collins has yet to take a position.  Now’s our chance to show her that her constituents are demanding Congress protect our Internet freedoms.  On Wednesday, we'll deliver thousands of petitions to Senator Susan Collins' office in Portland.  Can you join us?

What: Deliver petitions demanding Internet freedom to the Senator's office
Where: Susan Collins' office, One City Center, Portland, ME
When: Wednesday, August 30 at 12 noon

There’s more…
The week of September 11 will be a busy one in D.C.  Some legislators will be using this as a time to push legislation that threatens our civil liberties without making us any safer.  Maine’s Senators will play a key role.

Make your voice heard by writing a letter to the editor on one of the following issues.  Use the ACLU’s handy LTE tool!

Military Tribunals
The Supreme Court recently ruled that President Bush has no authority to try Guantanamo detainees in the unfair military commissions he created.  In response, the White House is pushing a proposal that asks Congress to rubberstamp the illegal commissions.

Senator Collins is on the Armed Forces Committee.  Tell her to oppose any legislation that would deny basic due process protections, gut the enforceability of Geneva Conventions protections, and put our soldiers in harm’s way.

Warrantless Surveillance
A U.S. Federal District Judge just declared parts of the National Security Agency’s warrantless spying program unconstitutional.  Now, Senator Arlen Specter and Vice President Cheney have crafted legislation that would authorize the program.

Senator Snowe is on the Select Committee on Intelligence, which oversees all federal intelligence activities.  Tell her to oppose any legislation that would legalize an unconstitutional program, strip us of fundamental First and Fourth Amendment rights, and abandon legislative and judicial checks and balances.

Act now!  Write a letter to the editor today! You can use the ACLU LTE tool here.

For sample letters or talking points, reply to this e-mail.

Don’t have time to write a letter?  Calling only takes a second!  Contact the Senators:
Senator Olympia Snowe: (800)432-1599

Senator Susan Collins: (202) 224-2523

And finally...
Get On the Bus to DC
FYI: Immigrants and advocates will be marching on Washington next week, September 7.  If you’d like to get on the bus (leaving the evening of September 6), let us know, and we can connect you to folks who are going.

Thanks for taking action today!

Best,
Rachel
