Dear friends, I write today with an urgent request. The U.S. Senate is poised to vote on an amendment banning flag desecration. Supporters are only ONE VOTE AWAY from securing the number of votes needed for the amendment to pass, and it has already passed in the House. That means we are ONE VOTE AWAY from sending an amendment to the states that would strike a blow to the First Amendment and YOUR FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS. Free expression and the right to dissent are core principles that the American flag represents. Our liberties can only remain vibrant and strong when we stand by these principles. If exceptions are made every time someone in power disagrees with a particular act or statement, our liberties will surely be compromised. Click here to take action: http://action.aclu.org/flag Then call both of Maine's Senators and urge them to vote NO on the flag amendment. Senator Snowe: Toll Free in Maine(800) 432-1599 Senator Collins: D.C. Office (202) 224-2523 If you would like to read more before taking action, click here: https://secure.aclu.org/site/Advocacy?id=449&JServSessionIdr002=essdo48po1.app27a. With your help, we've defeated this amendment before. Let's tell Congress they can't take away our First Amendment freedoms just to mobilize some politician's voter base! Action Alert System Update A few of you wrote to tell me you were having difficulty getting a password from Democracy In Action. I'm working out the kinks and would appreciate you trying again by clicking here: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizations/mclu/profile/profile.jsp. Updating your profile on Democracy In Action will allow us to send action alerts, petitions, etc. that are tailored to your geographic location and specific interest areas. Please let me know if you are still unable to access your account with this link. As always, thanks so much for all you do. Have a great weekend! Rachel Rachel L. Myers
