The Congressional Budget Office says cutting Social Security and veterans' benefits in this way would save the government $163 billion over ten years. The U.S. is still insisting that a transition to democracy in Egypt should be led by the Mubarak government, while the opposition in Egypt sees the departure of the present government as necessary for a democratic transition.
