Thank Barbara Boxer!

Quality Careers Added to Senate Climate Bill

It's working! Thanks to your phone calls, the current draft of the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act, introduced Tuesday by Senators John Kerry and Barbara Boxer, includes strong green standards and the access to middle-class construction careers we've been calling for!

The two equity provisions we advocated for, the Green Construction Careers Demonstration Project and funding for the Green Jobs Act, are in the bill.

On Monday, October 5 at noon, join a National Briefing Call to discuss the current draft and next steps for moving a strong, equitable bill forward. The call is open to anyone seeking to learn more and get active.

CPI Honorees:

Deborah Szekely
Deborah Szekely is one of this region's best-known emissaries for progressive causes. A dynamic leader and activist on both sides of the border, she has made her mark as a pioneer of the health and fitness revolution, a diplomat and international executive, a philanthropist and volunteer extraordinaire.

Deborah's career has championed a holistic platform of humanistic ideals: healthy lifestyles, educational access, social justice, arts and culture, responsible government, and a clean environment.  She is a regional treasure.

The MAAC Project
Since it began in 1965, the Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee -- better known as the MAAC Project -- has given over 1 million clients the tools for self-sufficiency and the confidence to envision a brighter future.

One of MAAC's newest programs is "Green Careers in Weatherization,"  which will train unemployed San Diegans for good, green jobs providing weatherization services to low-income households.

San Diego's Construction Workers
San Diego's construction workers include masons, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, ironworkers, sheet metal workers, laborers, and many others who build the essential infrastructures of this community. These men and women take great pride in their work, and they take great risks, too often getting injured or killed on the job.

The recession has decimated the building industry, and the loss of nearly one-fifth of California's construction jobs over the past year has impoverished too many families. But building trades workers stand ready to do their part to rebuild our sagging infrastructure and create a new green economy.
