CPI launches Follow the Money service for voters

Have you wondered how much the tourism industry contributes to each mayoral candidate?  Would you like to check a candidate's contributions from employees of a certain company?  Or from your own zip code?

These questions and many more can be answered easily with the revised and updated Follow the Money database launched today on CPI's web site, www.onlineCPI.org/FollowtheMoney

The searchable database contains information from the first set of campaign contribution statements filed with the San Diego City Clerk in the 2008 elections for Mayor, City Attorney and City Council, plus all contributions in the 2005-06 elections.  The database will be updated as new statements are filed, beginning with the next filing deadline on January 31.

Follow the Money can be searched by candidate, election year and specific dates, as well as by donor name, donor employer, industry, zip code, or any keyword.

CPI, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and advocacy organization, provides this searchable information as a public service to help inform voters about their local candidates.

Breakfasts to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Renowned civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was also a leader for working people.  Dr. King advocated for the minimum wage increase, organized the Poor People's Campaign for economic justice, and marched with striking sanitation workers in Memphis.  On January 21, two breakfast events will honor his legacy and bring together those who carry on the struggle for freedom, equality and justice.

Environmental Risks at Lane Field Hotel Development

A number of questions have been raised about the impact on residents, workers and marine life of a new InterContinental (IHG) Hotel proposed at Lane Field.  The risks are described on the website www.LaneFieldDevelopmentWatch.info

UNITE HERE Local 30, which created the web site, is urging the Port of San Diego to produce an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) specifically for the Lane Field project, to determine how it will affect everything from traffic to water resources.
