CPI raises questions on Navy Broadway tax revenue
CPI this week alerted San Diego redevelopment officials that a promised guarantee of hotel tax revenue from the waterfront Navy Broadway project has not materialized. Despite this and other objections, the Centre City Development Corp. approved developer Doug Manchester's massive plan.
CPI is concerned that city taxpayers will have to subsidize the project by $1.2 million a year for police and fire services unless hotel tax revenues are guaranteed, Research and Policy Director Murtaza Baxamusa explained in a memo to City officials.
The developer this week dropped his intent to build "condo hotels" from the plan -- thereby avoiding the need for both a tax revenue guarantee and California Coastal Commission review -- while reserving the right to add it back in later.
Laundry workers seek living wage
On Monday, a laundry worker filed a complaint that a uniform supply company has not been complying with the City of San Diego's Living Wage Ordinance. The company Prudential Overall Supply has backed ou tof the contract rathe rthan pay a livign wage, but the workers are continuing to fight for back pay. The company faces two other complaints for violating living wage ordinances in Los Angeles and Oakland.
Labor contract victories avert grocery and nurses’ strikes
Southern California grocery workers overwhelmingly ratified a new contract this week that eliminates the hated two-tier system and provides substantial wage increases.
The United Food and Commercial Workers union said more than 50,000 shoppers had pledged to not shop at Ralphs, Albertsons, or Vons if there was a lockout or strike – this support made a real difference!
San Diego nurses also avoided strike when they reached an agreement with Sharp HealthCare on a contract that includes a stronger voice for the frontline caregivers in improving the quality of health care.
The new contract for 3,400 nurses at Sharp also includes competitive wages, a new retiree healthcare initiative and increased financial security in retirement. The contract also protects nurses from being misclassified as management, a tactic that has been used to strip workers of their right to organize.
