May 21, 2013 Subject: I am writing to urge you to support single payer national health care system. This is the most popular reform among Americans and majorities of doctors and nurses. Congress is proving that a multi-payer system based on private insurance primarily through employment is unaffordably bureaucratic and wasteful. The Congress is considering taxing employers as well as taxing employees to pay for reforms that will give the insurance industry hundreds of billions in new revenue annually. And, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the most robust Democratic plan will result in 37 million still being uninsured in ten years. This is not real health care reform. This is a giveaway to the insurance industry that fails to solve America’s health care problems. The multi-payer insurance-based reform being considered will not work. It has been tried in a half dozen states and failed to provide health care for all and has been unable to control rapidly rising costs. Single payer is more cost effective, provides coverage to all Americans and gives Americans free choice in picking doctors, providers and health care. When President Obama was in the state senate in Illinois he said that he supported single payer health care but to get it the Democrats needed win back the House, Senate and Presidency. Well now Democrats control all three and should enact single payer health care. We are pleased to see the House holding a hearing on single payer and the Senate finally including a single payer advocate in hearings on health care reform, but that is not enough. When compared side by side it is evident that single payer is the only cost-effective way to provide health care to all Americans. Please support single payer health care. Thank you.
