Support H.R. 40, The Commission to Study Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act

H.R. 40 proposes establishing a Commission to examine slavery in the United States and its lingering negative effects. The Commission’s responsibilities would include recommending appropriate ways to educate the American public about their findings, and crafting a proposal for reparations, which, if passed by Congress, could lead to concrete actions to help rectify the deleterious impact of racism on black Americans. I am writing as a constituent and as a Unitarian Universalist to urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 40, The Commission to Study Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act.

With a foundational principle of affirming and promoting the inherent worth and dignity of every person, Unitarian Universalists carry on a proud tradition of working against racism and calling for government accountability.  The travesty of slavery and the economic injustice and discrimination to which slavery gave rise should not be permitted to go unacknowledged by our people or by our government.

The creation of the commission proposed in H.R. 40 would acknowledge not only slavery, but also the continued marginalization of African Americans beyond slavery's abolition.  The commission's work would help create a national conversation on race and racism that is badly needed. Furthermore, if implemented, the commission’s recommendations may lead to greater fairness and opportunity for all people.

Rep. John Conyers has introduced H.R. 40 every year since 1989, each year with growing momentum.  I urge you to join in the call for justice, and co-sponsor H.R. 40.
