VALUING ALL FAMILIES: Support the Child Citizen Protection Act - H.R. 1176

We Unitarian Universalists and interfaith and community leaders were at the rally called Valuing ALL Families in Stranahan Park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on June 27th. Together, we heard how immigrant families are being torn apart. Now you can take the next step and urge your Representative to offer hope to immigrant families by supporting the Child Citizen Protection Act. I am a constituent writing to urge you to support H.R.1176, The Child Citizen Protection Act.

On Friday, June 27th, I was one of over 650 Unitarian Universalists who participated in a rally during our denomination's annual business meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Together, we listened to the stories of immigrant families who have been harmed by our broken immigration system.  In response to injustice that they and others have faced, including the separation of their families, we urge you to support H.R.1176, which would empower judges to honor the inherent dignity of immigrants and citizens by preventing deportations in cases where an undocumented parent has a citizen child.

Fifteen percent of all families in the United States include at least one non-citizen parent and a U.S. citizen child. Parental involvement is critical to the development of children, as a close parent-child relationship increases the likelihood of a child's academic success, physical health, and emotional well-being. The Child Citizen Protection Act would have the potential to keep families together and allow children to grow and develop into thoughtful and contributing adult citizens.

I hope that you will protect our nation's children and families, and support H.R. 1176.
