End the Iraq War - Ensure Congressional Oversight of the Bush Administration

The Bush Administration is negotiating a security agreement with Iraqi leaders without any plans to include the U.S. Congress. Send the following message demanding that any security agreement be approved by our Congress. After reading the message, consider personalizing it by telling your Senators how you feel about the ongoing occupation of Iraq.

As a Unitarian Universalist, I call for an end to the immoral occupation of Iraq.  Currently I am concerned that the administration is negotiating a security agreement with Iraq without any plan to include Congress in the process. Therefore, I call for you to support S. 3433, the “Iraqi Security Agreement Act of 2008.”  The bill, introduced by Joe Biden, Chuck Hagel, Bob Casey, George Voinovich and Jim Webb, would prohibit both the formal entry into force and any expenditure to implement an agreement with Iraq that included either a “security guarantee” or a “security arrangement” without congressional approval.

The Iraqi constitution requires that the Iraqi parliamentary approve all “international agreements.” So Iraqi parliamentary scrutiny is all but assured.  But the Bush administration still insists that Congress has no role in approving a U.S.-Iraqi agreement.  S. 3433 would help ensure that the Bush administration is held accountable to the American people.

I urge you to support S. 3433 as a stand alone piece of legislation or as an amendment to the 2009 National Defense Authorization Act.
