Oppose Chertoff's Border Wall

In order to proceed with plans to build 670 miles of wall across the Mexico-U.S. border, on April 1st Michael Chertoff officially waived almost three dozen laws and regulations—including the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and many more. Rep. Grijalva of Arizona has proposed legislation to repeal Chertoff’s ability to waive laws which are intended to protect Native American and border communities and culture, air, water, wildlife, and health and safety. As your constituent and as a person of faith I urge you to support the Borderlands Conservation and Security Act of 2007, H. R. 2593.  This bill would repeal Section 102 of REAL ID, preventing Michael Chertoff, the Secretary of Homeland Security, from waiving almost three dozen laws for the planned construction of a border wall along the Mexico-U.S. border.

The laws which Chertoff has waived include the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and many more.  These waivers indicate that Chertoff will knowingly harm Native American communities, religious freedom, the environment, endangered species, and border communities as the construction of the border wall proceeds.

As a person of faith who believes in honoring both the religious freedom of all persons and our obligation to care for the earth and its creatures, I urge you to take action to ensure that laws intended to protect communities, culture, air, water, wildlife, and health and safety are fully complied with.  I urge you to support H.R. 2593.
