I. Apply for the Dana Greeley Award

All Unitarian Universalists are invited to submit a sermon (or address) to the UU-United Nations Office (UU-UNO). The topic this year should address “Empowering Women for a Better World.”

While all submissions will be considered, those highlighting the work of the United Nations and the UU-UNO will be given priority consideration. The winner will be awarded a cash prize of $1,000 and will have the opportunity to deliver the sermon or address at the next UUA General Assembly.

Send submissions by February 1, 2012 via email to greeleysermon@uu-uno.org. For more information, visit the UU-UNO's website.

II. News from the Transylvanian Unitarian Church

On January 13, 2012 the Consistory of the Transylvanian Unitarian Church honored the 444th anniversary of the proclamation of the first law on freedom of belief and conscience, and religious tolerance.

The Church celebrations began in the morning in the Unitarian Church of Torda with a worship service that included a history lecture on the importance of the Act on Religious Freedom. Then, the congregation walked over to the National Museum of Torda which was reopened in Fall 2011 after many long years of restoration.  Read more about the celebration!

III. We Are One: Crossing Borders as UUs

In preparation for the UUA's 'Justice General Assembly' in Phoenix, AZ (June 20-24, 2012), the Faith Without Borders program and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) have jointly organized three opportunities for service/learning trips to the U.S./Mexico border with our partner organization, BorderLinks.

Through education, meetings with partners, service opportunities, and theological reflection, participants will grow in understanding the human rights issues at stake on the U.S./Mexico border and return to their homes informed and inspired to be leaders for Immigration Justice. All Unitarian Universalists (over 16 years of age) are invited to attend one of the April or May trips!

Learn more about how you can join one of the Borderlinks trips to the U.S./Mexico border!

IV. Recommended Action: Climate Change

While governments hesitate over how to deal with the reality of global warming, the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues at an alarming pace.

Resulting weather disruptions like more frequent droughts, floods, and violent storms are already severe, and threaten to become far worse.

Recent scientific findings indicate that the time window for effective action may be even shorter than we thought.  Continue reading for the UU-UNO's recommended action that all UU's can take!

VI. ICUU Global Chalice Lighting - January 2011

The International Council of Unitarians and Universalists announces the 101st issue of its monthly series of global chalice lighting readings.

Congregations worldwide are invited to participate. All ICUU-affiliated groups have been asked to submit brief chalice lightings for the project. Every month, a reading will be distributed to Unitarian and Universalist congregations around the world.

We ask each congregation to use the reading for at least one worship service in the designated month, identifying it as the “Global Chalice Lighting” for that month and naming the group which submitted it. Readings will be circulated in English and, where different, in their original language.

It is hoped that the ICUU Global Chalice Lighting Project will enhance the worship experience in our congregations and raise awareness of the international dimensions of our religious movement.

This Global Chalice Lighting is submitted by the Australian and New Zealand Unitarian Universalist Association. It is to be used during January 2012.

A golden thread binds us to all that has been and will ever be.

Here the tender soul yearns.
Here the greatest dreams are sighted.
Here the sacred flame burns.
