UUA Immigration News
November 2011: How to get 200+ UUs to a Conference on Immigration!
Dear Immigrant Justice Leaders,
This month’s issue includes great news from the Pacific Central District about their immigration conference (225 participants!), as well as resources and actions for organizing for immigrant justice and Justice GA2012.
Thanks to all of the nearly 60 UU congregations that participated in the DREAM Sabbath in September and October in support of the DREAM Act. Read about Unity Temple UU’s experience here (and we’d love to hear what your congregation did!).
As always, we hope you’ll get in touch and share what is happening in your congregation and community.

Take Action: Halt Ravi Ragbir’s Deportation!
So far, more than 1800 people have signed the petition to halt Ravi Ragbir's deportation. Ravi is an organizer with the New York New Sanctuary Movement who has worked with our congregations in New York and nationally in fighting ICE's inhumane immigration policies. Now he's in danger of being ripped from his family and community and deported from the US. If you haven’t already, please sign the petition to keep Ravi in the US -- and spread the word.
New Resource: Welcoming America launches Friends of Welcoming!
Friends of Welcoming is an online platform created by Welcoming America to support you in making our country a more welcoming place–starting with YOUR community! You can join as yourself or with your congregation. Points are earned for doing welcoming activities, such as signing a Welcoming Pledge or organizing a potluck bringing immigrants and non-immigrants together. Prizes are offered for groups with the most points (such as money to your favorite non-profit!), and the Friends of Welcoming website will continually be updated with resources, ideas, and opportunities to connect with others doing the same ministry.

Spanish Lessons: 20% discount for UUs taking Spanish classes in Mexico!
For those wishing to learn Spanish or brush up on their current level of Spanish, Solexico is offering this discount to all Unitarian Universalists. UUA Moderator Gini Courter and UU ministers Rev. Nancy Palmer Jones (First Unitarian Church of San Jose, CA), and Rev. Wendy von Zirpolo (Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead, MA) have worked with Solexico to negotiate the discount and some customization of the program. Their programs are offered in three locations in Mexico. Students may sign up for one or more weeks to receive the discount. Programs vary in terms of daily hours and level of instruction.
More information may be viewed at their website: solexico.com
More information about UUs attending, including a schedule, may be viewed on the Facebook Page UUs Attending Solexico. Questions may be posed on the Facebook page and testimonies from those attending may appear there as well.
Rev. Wendy von Zirpolo writes: "When I first attended for one week, I arrived with no Spanish and alot of trepidation! The program was wonderful and I learned a lot. Attending for a longer period is definitely better, but even one week gave me enough to continue on my own. What made us pursue the discount was Solexico's willingness to adapt the instruction to our specific needs."
Rev. Nancy Palmer Jones says, "Solexico offers the best all-around program I have found: grammar and conversation for all levels, plus fun social activities with students from around the world. If you are traveling alone, I highly recommend staying with a family. And the settings are gorgeous: swim with the turtles, then set up your study hall on the beach at Playa del Carmen. The immersion in the Mexican culture was as important as the language study--both deepen our experience of life in our own multicultural U.S.A."
