National Report Calls for End to S-Comm

Dear Immigration News Readers:

In response to growing state and local opposition to their misleadingly named “Secure Communities” program (S-Comm), ICE created a taskforce to conduct a review but notably excluded the voices of affected communities, scholars, or critics. Then on August 5th, ICE announced that the "Memorandums of Agreement" with state and local officials were "unnecessary" and being rescinded. ICE is dropping any pretense of listening to the communities it serves and unilaterally imposing its deeply flawed enforcement-only strategy. Thus, leaders, experts and victims of our failed immigration policies have had no choice but to come together and create our own report, which constitutes a real deliberative and representative review of S-Comm.

Released today, the national report concludes that S-Comm is beyond salvaging and calls for its end. The report is endorsed by the UUA and includes a statement from UUA President Rev. Peter Morales.

From the National Community Advisory Commission:
“This report confirms what immigrant communities have long known. The program called Secure Communities results in the opposite. Entangling local police in immigration enforcement is not just bad policy as the experts testify. Conscripting local police into immigration enforcement has provoked a massive civil rights crisis our country now faces. The only suitable approach is to end Secure Communities.”

In Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, and other cities across the nation, groups are mobilizing to demand an end to S-Comm. Add your voice to theirs by signing the petition. Stand on the Side of Love with Immigrant Families!
