Urge Your Representative to Oppose Mandatory E-Verify

The House of Representatives is currently considering a bill that if passed would force all businesses, even those who only have one employee, to check the immigration status of all employees via an online system called "e-verify." The e-verify system has been fraught with errors. Over 50% of undocumented workers pass through undetected while on the other hand thousands of workers who are in the U.S. legally have been erroneously flagged. Mandatory e-verify puts an unnecessary burden on small businesses and encourages them to hire "off the books" thereby causing the loss of millions of dollars in tax revenues.

E-verify will not reduce the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. What it will do is hurt U.S. workers, small businesses, and our economy. Moreover, it will make it virtually impossible for undocumented immigrants to work in the U.S., unless they do so in the "shadow economy" where they are subject to abuse and wage theft. The only thing that enforcement-only policies have served to accomplish is to cause human misery. We need real, humane immigration reform that keeps families together and provides a pathway to legal status. Tell your Representative, "No more enforcement until we get real immigration reform!"
